This technique provides accurate leaf area estimates in forest stands, suggesting calibration can improve results.
A method is described for visual estimation of leaf area in forest stands. The estimates may be "corrected" against harvested and measured standards. With adequate training, and attention to some simple rules, repeatable and accurate estimation is possible. Techniques for calibration, and analysis of sources of error, are given. The use of the method is illustrated with measurements taken in eucalypt forests in the southwest of Western Australia. Forest Sci. 25:53-58.
