Anatomical analysis identifies key features in leaves and petioles of Hedyosmum brasiliense, aiding quality control.
The utilization of medicinal plants presents the potential problem of other matter being used as filler material, thereby reducing the true medicinal value. The leaf structure of Hedyosmum brasiliense Mart, ex Miq. (Chloranthaceae) was studied in this work, as an aid toward quality control of this medicinal species. Plant material was collected from the Volta Velha Reserve, located in Itapoá, state of Santa Catarina, BR. Anatomical analyses were made of mature leaves. Lamina were analyzed at the leaf center, at the level of its midrib. Petiole were analyzed al the half length. Laterocytic and large stomata, presence of glandular epidermal cells, undifferentiated mesophyll, sclereids, hydathodes in the lamina, and ducts in the petiole are characteristics typical of this species, and are useful in testing the possible admixture of other products
