Literature review reveals AI improves environmental performance in corporations, highlighting integration challenges.
Objective: This study aims to investigate the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in corporate sustainability practices, focusing on its contribution to companies’ environmental performance. Theoretical framework: The research is grounded on concepts of circular economy, corporate environmental performance, sustainable finance, and sustainability-oriented business models, integrating national and international studies published between 2015 and 2025. Method: A critical literature review was conducted, with a qualitative and exploratory approach, covering 28 sources including scientific articles, technical documents, and institutional reports. Among these, 13 were systematized in an analytical matrix, allowing the comparison of authors, AI techniques, application areas, and main findings. Results and discussion: The findings highlighted improvements such as greater accuracy in climate predictions, efficiency in monitoring emissions, and reduced resource consumption. However, limitations were identified regarding data availability, computational costs, and lack of regulatory standardization. Analyses indicate that AI can strengthen monitoring, assessment, and reporting processes in sustainability, but still faces ethical and methodological challenges. Research implications: The results emphasize the need for technological integration in corporate contexts to support responsible business practices and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Originality/value: The contribution of this study lies in the critical synthesis between international literature and Brazilian research, highlighting both the potential and the restrictions of AI use in corporate sustainability.
