This analysis shows pathways of grammaticalization in the Korean noun 'geot', suggesting semantic maps enhance understanding of complex structures.
This study examines the grammaticalizaition of the Korean dependent noun ‘goet(것)’ using a semantic map framework. The noun ‘goet(것)’ has developed from a concrete reference to objects into abstract functions such as situation marking, modality, and discourse functions, making it a representative case of grammaticalization in Korean. Based on examples from existing literature, this study identifies the paths of semantic expansion and visualizes them in a semanitc map. The connections between semantic nodes are established not merely by intuitive similarity but grounded in syntactic patterns and functional proximity, thereby reinforcing the empirical applicability of semantic maps. The results suggest that semantic maps can complement diachronic analyses by offering a systematic synchronic representation of semantic structures. Moreover, this approach holds pedagogical value by enabling learners to understand complex grammatical meanings through conceptual networks rather than rote memorization.
