Case report highlights successful palliative method utilizing systemic acitretin and retinoic acid in verrucous carcinoma, suggesting alternatives when surgery is unfeasible.
Verrucous carcinoma is a rare variant of well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma with locally aggressive and minimal metastatic potential. We report a case of an 80-year-old female who had presented with oral verrucous carcinoma of the lip, refusing wide excision after a previously failed surgical treatment and was successfully treated by systemic acitretin 10 mg/day and topical application of retinoic acid 0.025% cream.
