Analysis of low-temperature combustion strategies shows potential for improved emissions and energy efficiency in internal combustion engines.
As the automobile industry swings towards more sustainable solutions, the goal of higher energy efficiency and decreased emissions in internal combustion engines has grown significantly. Among them, Low-Temperature Combustion (LTC) strategies, such as HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition), PCCI (Premixed Charge Compression Ignition), and RCCI (Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition), form one of the key developments in this field. These new technologies will satisfy stringent environmental standards and improve fuel economy. The current paper presents an in-depth analysis of the LTC technologies, their combustion process, advantages, challenges, methods, and comparative performance and emission testing. It is identified herein that LTC technologies could have huge potential for improving the efficiency of conventional internal combustion engines and reducing emission levels. Further, this work will present future directions in LTC research toward addressing advanced control systems, fuel development, and hybrid systems integration. The findings highlight the importance of ongoing research and updates to fully realize the potential LTC technology.
