This technology trial evaluates zonal isolation strategies using expandable steel packers in open holes, suggesting improved operation and isolation.
Whilst there are cost advantages associated with open hole (OH) compared to cased hole completions, open hole gravel packs (OHGPs) with multiple zones tend to be a challenge both in terms of operation and zonal isolation. Field C presented an opportunity for a technology trial involving Expandable-Steel Shunted Zonal Isolation Packers (SZIPs) designed for OH isolation with larger completions bore to accommodate multizonal slim-hole 2-7/8-inch upper completions with flow control valves and gauges. These packers, based on existing expandable steel packer technology, are set hydraulically without the need for hydrostatic pressure, and incorporate shunt tubes that are compatible with field proven shunted screen systems for multizone (MZ) OHGP. In OH application, SZIPs would be placed in the lower completions screen bottom hole assembly (BHA) to isolate production zones and shale streaks accordingly. Upon conveying the BHA to depth and setting the gravel pack (GP) packer, individual SZIPs can be set through manipulation of the service string. A second trip then conveys the GP service string with diverter valves to promote unconventional heel to toe gravel packing to cater to ultra-low fracture margins.
