Observational analysis improved operational efficiency in oil and gas workflows, suggesting automation reduces manual errors.
In today's fast-paced oil and gas environment, the pressure to deliver faster, smarter, and more accurate results is stronger than ever. Yet, many workflows across the industry still depend on manual processes, especially when it comes to managing and analyzing operational data. These outdated methods not only consume valuable time, but they also leave room for human errors, inconsistent metrics, and missed opportunities. Recognizing this gap, our team set out to improve how performance data is handled by developing an automated Key Performance Indicator (KPI) Calculator tailored for well operations in Malaysia. Traditionally, engineers spent a significant amount of time extracting data from various sources, manually calculating key metrics like drilling duration, well cost as per right cost category, and Non-Productive Time (NPT), and manually inputting the results into different systems. This repetitive and error-prone process was not only inefficient but also prone to inconsistencies that impacted both decision-making and delayed progress tracking. The KPI Calculator revolutionized this workflow by automating the entire business process. From data extraction to calculation and system writeback, integrating directly with existing operational systems and databases. The tool enables engineers to obtain accurate KPI results within seconds, significantly improving benchmarking, operational reviews, and future planning. What once took hours of manual effort can now be done in seconds with a single click, ensuring reliable and timely data. Beyond this case study, the general methodology for enhancing oil and gas business workflows through automation was three-fold. First both parties, client and partner will embark on a comprehensive analysis of the process across the entire well lifecycle. This step involved identifying repetitive, manual, time-consuming high impact tasks that could be automated. Second, the feasibility and potential for improvement were assessed, looking over opportunities for automation, evaluating data source availability, and addressing technical implementation challenges while carefully selecting the appropriate technology stack. Third, the newly implemented processes were monitored and optimized, quantifying the benefits in terms of cost savings, operational efficiency gains, and risk reduction while also considering improvements in data accuracy, timeliness and decision making. This paper shares how we approached the challenge: starting with a deep understanding of business needs, identifying pain points, and working closely with stakeholders to co-develop a solution that fits seamlessly into current practices. The result is not only improved accuracy and data reliability, but also stronger collaboration and faster decision-making. KPI Calculator will be a case study in this paper to show how we applied this methodology to address inefficiencies in business. More than just a tool, the KPI Calculator represents a shift toward smarter workflows. As industry continues to embrace digital transformation, this work highlights how automation, when thoughtfully designed, can unlock real value and move organizations closer to operational excellence.
