This review highlights successful applications of subsurface barrier valves in subsea gas projects in China, indicating technology evolution and key benefits.
Subsurface Barrier Valves (SBVs) have evolved into critical safety and operational tools for subsea deepwater developments worldwide. Initially developed from fluid loss control concepts, SBVs now deliver high-reliability, bidirectional sealing capabilities essential for well suspension and long-term integrity. In China South China Sea, over 40 successful installations including cased-hole wells and open-hole wells demonstrating consistent and reliable performance. This paper reviews SBV applications in China subsea projects, traces the evolution of isolation valve technology, shares lessons learned globally, highlights success cases in China, and previews future developments.
