Case series shows improvement in astigmatism and tomographic changes post-pterygium excision, highlighting the need for thorough preoperative assessment.
This case series highlights the impact of pterygium and its excision on both regular and irregular corneal astigmatism, emphasising the importance of preoperative corneal tomography. Degrees of astigmatism caused by pterygium, along with the associated tomographic changes, correlate with its size. For patients with significant astigmatism, particularly those exhibiting over 15 diopters (D) of irregular astigmatism, comprehensive assessment using corneal tomography is crucial to optimize surgical planning and enhance postoperative visual recovery. Cases presented demonstrate notable improvement in both corneal tomography and astigmatism following pterygium excision, reinforcing the need for detailed preoperative evaluation to guide effective surgical management and maximise outcomes.
