Observation of abnormal thermal quenching in Sm3+-doped phosphors indicates potential for optical thermometry and solid-state lighting applications.
Abstract A series of Sm³⁺-doped Ba₂La₆Y₂(SiO₄)₆O₂ phosphors were synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state reaction. The obtained compounds crystallized in an apatite-type structure. Upon 403 nm excitation, the samples exhibited intense orange-red emission. Concentration quenching was determined to result from exchange interactions between Sm³⁺ ions. The phosphors demonstrated high color purity and abnormal thermal quenching behavior within 398–473 K temperature range. Furthermore, the temperature-dependent fluorescence intensity ratio suggests potential application in optical thermometry. These results indicate that BLYSO: Sm³⁺ is a functionally versatile material with potential for application in solid-state lighting and optical temperature sensing.
