Deterministic seismic hazard analysis assessed earthquake vulnerability of a bridge, indicating risks from faults nearby.
Abstract This study examines the seismic vulnerability of a key bridge located on the Grand Trunk Road, Rawalpindi. The bridge carries substantial traffic flow and plays a key role in connecting surrounding urban regions. To evaluate its seismic performance, a Deterministic Seismic Hazard Analysis (DSHA) approach has been adopted, providing site specific insights into the seismic demands on this vital structure. Faults falling within a 200 km radius of the site including the Main Mantle Thrust, Panjal Thrust, Jhelum Thrust, Main Boundary Thrust, Rawat Fault, Kalabagh Fault, and Himalayan Frontal Thrust were considered to determine the maximum earthquake generating potential. The analysis revealed that the Rawat Fault, located about 11.71 km from the bridge, exhibits the highest peak ground acceleration (PGA) value of 0.42g.
