Analysis reveals improved mechanical properties in Mg/Al composite with stainless steel interlayer, suggesting enhanced performance.
In this study, Mg/Al composite plate with a stainless steel mesh interlayer is successfully fabricated by rolling. The effect of the stainless steel interlayer on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the composite plate is comprehensively investigated. The results indicate that the as‐rolled Mg/Al‐steel plate exhibits strong interfacial bonding without significant formation of intermetallic compounds at the interface. The stainless steel interlayer also helps weaken the texture intensity of both the Al and Mg layers in the as‐rolled composite plate. Compared to the Mg/Al plate, the Mg/Al–steel plate shows slightly higher yield strength (YS) (197 MPa) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) (262 MPa), but lower elongation (El) (11.0%). After annealing at 420 °C for 5 h, the Mg/Al–steel plate demonstrates higher YS (134 MPa), UTS (227 MPa), and El (21.2%) than the Mg/Al plate. Additionally, the stainless steel interlayer significantly enhances the interfacial shear strength of both the as‐rolled and annealed Mg/Al composite plates.
