Descriptive survey design reveals effects of government information resources on collection development, suggesting improvements for library services.
This study sought to investigate the effects of government information resources on collection development in Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE) Library, Rumuolumeni, Rivers State. Descriptive survey design was the design for the study. The population of the study consisted of 10 librarians working in IAUE Library in Rivers State. The entire population was used. Questionnaire was the instrumentused for data collection which was designed by the researcher based on the three research questions generated. The researcher administered the questionnaire personally. Data was collected immediately to avoid duplication. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the three research questions. The findings of the study include that government information resources contained richly diverse information, contributed new insights, provide demographic information. The quality of the content, currency, adequacy, format and cost of collections amongst others are the policies that influence government information resources. The factors that militate against government information resources on collection development and library services include that the resources are not being published on time, lack of willing power by library staff to chase them. The study recommends that there is need to reposition academic library services, adequately include government information resources to the library stock and to have a desk staff for government publications.
