It is indicated that the era of instant information exchange and digital technologies, which create a new cultural paradigm, determines innovative approaches to the development of copyright. The institution of copyright, originally created to recognize and protect creative achievements, has undergone radical changes throughout its history. Its evolution is closely correlated with the progress of society, scientific and technological achievements and the transformation of the ways of interaction between creators, consumers and state institutions. However, with the development of mass media, the emergence of the Internet and digital technologies, the role of this institution has become significantly more complicated. The actuality of research is conditioned by the necessity of reinterpreting of the copyright institution in the circumstances of the digital transformation of the society which is followed by the development of the artificial intelligence, blockchain, digital platforms and the change of imagination about art, intellectual property and the role of the author. The purpose of the research is the complex analysis of historic and legal circumstances of the copyright formation and finding modern tendencies of its transformation including modern challenges of digital era. The article highlights that modern copyright stands out of traditional legal defence of works, paying attention to preserving creative start as apart of cultural memory of mankind. Elucidated examination of both foreign and Ukrainian scientific research shows gradual transformation of copyright in the response of the challenges of digital era and also the necessity of adaptation of national laws to international standards. Theoretical views of the scientists not only reflect modern state of legal doctrine but also form conceptual guideline for practical law enforcement. The conclusion is made about the necessity of combining the legal traditions of the past with innovative approaches of modernity for creating effective and impartial system of copyright defence. Followed that transformation of Ukrainian copyright is not only legal but also civilizational change which leads it into the area of modern European and global standards.
