This examination reveals the tension between experienced reality and artistic imagination in Sayat-Nova's love lyrics, highlighting the depth and sincerity of his emotions.
The present study is devoted to the key problem of Sayat-Nova's love lyrics: therelationship between experienced reality and artistic imagination. There has long been adebate in Armenian literary criticism about the nature of the ashugh's love, which is oftenpolarized around the dilemma of "real or fictional." However, such an approachoversimplifies the complex nature of troubadour art.The purpose of the study is to examine the relationship between experiencedreality and artistic imagination in Sayat-Nova's love lyrics, arguing that the poet's love isnot a mere literary device but the result of the artistic fictionalization of real experience. To achieve this goal, a comprehensive approach was applied, combiningcomparative, literary-philosophical, and structural analysis methods. The two mainviewpoints are contrasted, and based on the arguments of H. Tumanyan, P. Sevak, andH. Bakhchinyan, an in-depth examination of Sayat-Nova's songs (games) is conducted. As a result of applying these comprehensive methods, the following objectiveswere set and addressed:• To analyze the two main viewpoints in Armenian literary criticism regarding thenature of Sayat-Nova's love: the "real" and the "fictional."• To investigate the causes of the tragedy in his love, as well as the biographicaland creative interrelations.• To reveal the philosophical and psychological layers of Sayat-Nova's lovethrough a thematic analysis of key songs. The study concludes that Sayat-Nova's love is a real, lived experience, which isconfirmed by the emotional sincerity of his songs, biographical references, and the depthof his feelings. His unattainable love became not only the basis of his immortal poetry butalso the driving force behind his reflections on life, art, and devotion. Born from a realfoundation, his poetry is reshaped and universalized through the conventions oftroubadour art, transforming personal suffering into a universal human experience. Thus, Sayat-Nova's unattainable love became not only the foundation of hisimmortal poetry but also the driving force behind his reflections on life, art, and devotion.
