This research emphasizes climate change's impact on event travel careers and tourism, suggesting the need for urgent action.
Event travel careers (ETCs) both contribute and are vulnerable to the escalating impacts of anthropogenic climate change. Due to climate change, the tourism and event industries are operating in a milieu of increasing uncertainty. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has called for societal transformation with rapid reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, a transition which will impact tourism and events, including if/how individuals engage in ETCs and event-based travel. In recognition that exploring uncertainties is a necessary step in preparing for their eventuation, this research note calls for greater consideration of climate change in ETC and event tourism scholarship. The note encourages scholars working at the intersections of events, tourism, and event-oriented leisure activities (e.g., sport) to embrace research approaches which address the climate vulnerability and environmental impacts of ETCs and event tourism.
