Single case study shows functional assessment-based behavioral intervention improves problem behaviors, suggesting effective strategies for children facilities.
This study aims to examine the effects of functional assessment-based behavioralintervention on problem behaviors of children in facilities. The subject of the study was aboy attending elementary school who had been living in a child care facility since birth andwhose problem behaviors frequently appeared, so the director of the facility requested theintervention. This study identified the functions of problem behaviors based on a systematicfunctional assessment of the target child and implemented multifactorial interventionsincluding background and antecedent event interventions, alternative behavior interventions, and follow-up outcome interventions. The results are as follows. First, functionalassessment-based behavioral interventions had a positive effect on problem behaviors ofchildren in facilities. Second, functional assessment-based behavioral interventions had apositive effect on increasing desirable behaviors. Third, functional assessment-basedbehavioral interventions had a positive effect on K-CBCL pre-post changes. Thesignificance of this study lies in the fact that it proves that clearly identifying the functionsof problem behaviors through functional assessment and applying appropriate interventionsis an effective strategy for preventing and intervening problem behaviors of children infacilities.
