Overview highlights the evolution of treatment for depression from exorcisms to electric shock therapy.
Current treatments for depression have come a long way from what was practiced in ancient times, the Middle Ages and early part of the 20th century. From the treatment ideas of balancing the body fluids (humours) as suggested by Hippocrates (400 B.C.), to exorcisms, drowning and burning in Europe during the Middle Ages, to talking therapies, electric shock treatments to lobotomies (in extreme cases), the quest for not only understanding but also effective treatment for depression continues.
