This novel method demonstrates a unique iodine-mediated reaction to create flavones from β-tosyl chalcones, circumventing typical substrate requirements.
An unprecedented iodine(III) mediated oxa-Michael reaction/C=C bond migration/C(sp2)-H oxygenation/detosylation cascade for the preparations of flavones from β-tosyl chalcones has been developed. This metal-free approach advantageously circumvents the necessity of pre ortho-hydroxy functionalized substrates typically required for the preparation of flavones. It gives efficient access to several bioactive natural products such as baicalein, chrysin and apigenin.
