This method enables efficient datum transformation in GIS software, facilitating data updates in Slovenia.
The Surveying and Mapping Authority of the Republic of Slovenia used a triangle-based transformation model for the entire country to transform between the old D48/GK and the current D96/TM coordinate reference systems. Despite the transition to the current coordinate system being completed in 2022, much old data remains across various institutions that needs to be transformed. Because the triangle-based transformation is not supported in GIS software, users are faced with additional work, as they must transform old data to the current coordinate reference system outside the established GIS ecosystem. In this article, we present the development of a datum transformation using the NTv2 grid method for transitioning between the D48 and D96 geodetic datums. This alternative solution simulates the nationwide triangle-based transformation model quite accurately (within 1 cm) and thus allows users to transform their outdated spatial data directly within GIS software, whether permanently or on-the-fly.
