In 2017, SYSTRA was selected by the Balfour Beatty-VINCI joint venture, alongside Mott MacDonald, to design lots N1 and N2 located in the North of HS2 project. SYSTRA is responsible for the design of three composite viaducts, including the River Cole and M42-M6 Motorway Viaducts, four-span structures, each 158 meters long, using open-top U type steel girders and prefabricated concrete slabs. The M6 Motorway Viaduct comprises two parallel decks, each a five-span continuous viaduct of 314 meters, supporting four HS2 lines, featuring two twin steel box girders and prefabricated concrete slabs. The innovative construction method for M6 Motorway Viaduct involves launching the viaduct with varying precamber to prevent uplift. All these structures have been conceived by SYSTRA during the sifting process done on the ERD (Employer Reference Design).
