Analysis reveals track geometry recovery after tamping maintenance on two superstructures, suggesting effectiveness differences.
Track geometry is characterized by five geometrical parameters: longitudinal level, alignment, gauge, cross level and twist. Likewise by the track quality index (TQI) which can be used for aggregating two or more of the mentioned parameters. The standard deviation is one of the most commonly used TQIs. It represents the dispersion of a signal over a given track section. The paper investigates the change of these standard deviations after maintenance actions with a tamping machine. The changes were inspected in different sections of the Bulgarian railway infrastructure constructed by two different types of superstructure: respectively by rails type S49 with reinforced concrete sleepers CT-4 and by rails UIC60 with reinforced concrete sleepers CT-6. A comparison was made of average recovery values of the track geometry for the two types of superstructure and the effectiveness of the performed maintenance activities.
