This analysis examines carbon emissions and material use in road bridges, highlighting strategies for sustainability.
Bridges are essential for socio-economic development, but their construction materials, such as steel and concrete, contribute significantly to carbon emissions and resource depletion. The Netherlands aims to reduce carbon emissions and virgin material use by 50% by 2030 and achieve net zero carbon and full circularity by 2050. This paper evaluates the circular performance of current bridge construction methods, focusing on primary material use and carbon emissions. Analysis of 15 recent small road bridge designs indicates a reliable benchmark and shows that precast concrete beams are more material- and carbon-efficient than in-situ concrete slabs. A circular performance roadmap to 2050 shows the need for sharp performances reduction to meet the goals. The study proposes a labelling system to help policymakers and project teams meet and track progress toward circular goals and highlights circular strategies for improving bridge performance.
