Analysis reveals significant reductions in carbon emissions in steel bridges, highlighting challenges in assessment methods.
This study examines the quantitative impacts of low-carbon strategies on steel bridges. Carbon emissions for Modules A1-A5 were calculated using advanced materials in a single-span steel girder bridge with a reinforced concrete deck slab. The results showed significant reductions in carbon emissions compared to conventional materials. These findings were compared with those of similarly scaled PC girder bridges from previous studies. Additionally, less-studied carbon emissions in the use stage were examined, and calculation examples for maintenance activities in accordance with the maintenance scenarios of U.S. and Japan were presented. Finally, anticipated challenges in carbon emission calculation methods throughout the life cycle are discussed based on the findings.
