This experimental device visualizes separation processes in all configurations, indicating improvements in PHGMS technology.
Pulsating high gradient magnetic separation (PHGMS) is a dominant technology for the recovery of weakly magnetic ores and purification of non-magnetic mineral products. One problem faced by theoretical studies on PHGMS technology is the lack of appropriate equipment to observe and analyze its separation process, especially in longitudinal configuration as adopted in most industrial PHGMS separators. In this study, a PHGMS device that could allow visualized observation of separation process in all three configurations (transversal, longitudinal, axial) was designed. To be specific, a magnetic system with feeding holes drilled along the center of iron core was proposed, theoretically calculated, and optimized through simulation work, then a stainless-steel frame with ratatable shaft was designed to support the magnetic system. After the device was manufactured, the magnetic field strength was detected, and the results were in good agreements with predicted values from simulation. An experimental platform was also built on the basis of the device, which set a good example on how to record the separation process and how to have an independent analysis for the magnetic deposits collected from upper and lower surfaces of the matrix. The designing methods demonstrated in this paper offer a valuable reference on how to design magnetic separation equipments.
