Multi-paradigm analysis identifies word formation types and their functions, suggesting their interplay in cognitive and communicative needs.
Word formation study, like all spheres of linguistics, has been enriched in its development by the concepts and methodological approaches of different scientific paradigms. In the history of word formation, the structural and communicativecognitive paradigms have clearly made themselves known. The volume of accumulated data and the level of their theoretical comprehension at the present stage allow us to move to the integration of knowledge, require a synthesizing view of the objects of word formation study. The article presents a multi-paradigm analysis of word-formation model types from the point of view of performed functions. It also considers the correlation of functional types (purpose) of word-formation models, distinguished from the positions of structural, communicative, cognitive approaches. Within the framework of the structural paradigm, the types of word-formation models were identified in terms of the semantic relations between the original (producing) and the newly formed (derived) word generated by them; such types of word formation as syntactic and lexical derivation (with a distinction between mutation and modification) and equivalence word-formation models were singled out and characterized. In the aspect of communicative conditionality of word production processes, Elena Zemskaya proposed a communicatively oriented classification of word-formation models, which provided a basis for studying word-formation derivation as a means of ensuring the communicative needs of speakers. The author clarifies the role of word-formation derivation in the processes of conceptualization and categorization of the world from the position of cognitively oriented approach, raising the question about what aspects of human experience are systematized by the action of the word-formation mechanism. Derivatives of wordformation models belonging to different semantic and communicative types, in terms of their cognitive essence (functions of fixation and representation of cognitive experience) are distributed in general between two types of conceptualization – conceptualization of reality and conceptualization of communicative experience. At the same time, the boundaries between the representatives of the two named types of conceptualization are mobile, which is connected with the non-rigid differentiation of different cognitive vectors in the processes of linguistic categorization of knowledge. Correlation of semantic varieties of word-formation models, their communicative and cognitive types, makes it possible to see, on the one hand, the role and interaction of cognitive and communicative needs and operations in the realization of word-formation mechanisms of language, and to characterize, on the other hand, the role of word-formation derivation in providing the needs of worldmodeling and communication.
