Pilot program boosts college readiness and retention in underrepresented students, suggesting effective mentorship.
The PSYCHED for Success (Preparing Scholarly Youth for Collegiate Habits, Emotional Wellness and Academic Discipline for Success - P4S) pilot program enables secondary school students in their final academic years to be exposed to the collegiate environment, while enhancing their knowledge on socioemotional intelligence and autonomy. P4S incorporates the most effective aspects of these initiatives by providing a holistic, adaptable model aimed at enhancing college and career readiness in comparison to other previous college readiness programs such as GEAR UP, College Possible, and Summer Bridge Programs. The goal is to improve retention and success in collegiate programming for underrepresented students. The student participants completed a pre-test and engaged in an 8-week extensive module program before completing a post-test. Findings indicated that early academic support, mentorship, and structured intervention programs can significantly contribute to the increase of collegiate enrollment adaptability, college confidence and future academic success.
