This investigation demonstrates improved corrosion and wear resistance in zinc coatings on steel, indicating potential for enhanced durability.
An improvement method of working properties for zinc coatings on steels, made by the cold galvanizing method for increasing their reliability and durability is proposed. As a result of the zinc coatings annealing in ammonia, the formation of strengthened modified layers was experimentally established as a consequence of diffusion processes both in the steel substrate and in the coating. The structure of the strengthened layer provides an increase in wear resistance of the nitrated zinc coating and their adhesion resistance with the steel substrate. The increase in corrosion resistance of the nitrated zinc coatings is shown in different environments: salt solution, diluted acid, sea water and salt fog. It takes place due to the combination of cathode and barrier protection mechanisms.
