A series of triaryl corrole copper complexes improves hydrogen evolution activity in various media, suggesting effective design via meso-substituents.
A series of triaryl corrole copper complexes ( 1 – 4 ) bearing different numbers of pentafluorophenyl groups were prepared, and their electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity was evaluated in both organic and aqueous media. It was found that the redox peaks shift positively with the increasing number of pentafluorophenyl. In DMF, copper tri‐pentafluorophenyl corrole complex 4 exhibited the highest electrocatalytic HER activity, achieving a TOF max of 3019 s −1 . Furthermore, in neutral aqueous‐acetonitrile media, complex 4 exhibited the best activity and excellent stability over 8 h of electrolysis while achieving 93% Faradaic efficiency. The HER activity of copper corroles increased with the number of pentafluorophenyl groups, following the order of 4 > 3 > 2 > 1 .
