Analysis reveals that increased congestion and confinement affect explosion loads in FPSOs, highlighting design importance.
The explosion phenomena depend on many variables, the most important ones are the level of congestion and confinement of an area (Gexcon AS., 2022). The higher the congestion/confinement, the higher the physical effects of the phenomena will be. The development of an Offshore installation design is a complex process which involves many systems where the level of detailing increases throughout its development, it is "natural" that the level of detailing of the 3D model will also increase until de finalization of this process. Based on this, it is crucial that during the development of the Explosion Study in basic and detail design shall consider a minimum of congestion level in order to obtain explosion loads that would be as equal, or higher, as those that would be obtained if the as built 3D model of the installation would have been utilized and allowing it to be developed in early stages of the design development, avoiding impacts in costs and schedule and improving the design´s safe.
