Assessment reveals critical thinking and pedagogy improvements in middle school, suggesting effective gen AI integration strategies.
Generative Artificial Intelligence (gen AI) is reshaping education by offering both opportunities and challenges for middle school teachers and students. This article examines the outcomes of a year-long professional learning community (PLC) focused on integrating gen AI in middle schools. Our interdisciplinary team of university faculty, doctoral students, and middle school teachers explores diverse applications of gen AI through teacher-led inquiry projects. We present a framework categorizing gen AI's role in education from teaching AI concepts to using AI tools for pedagogy, ethical discussions, and teacher support. These projects illustrate gen AI's potential to enrich teaching practices, foster critical thinking, and address equity in education while acknowledging implementation challenges. We conclude with lessons learned and recommendations for schools considering gen AI integrations.
