Morphological analysis reveals new species Baladorylaimus karegari in Iran, indicating its distinct features in Dorylaimida with implications for phylogenetic relationships.
Summary A new species of the very rare genus, Baladorylaimus , an aquatic dorylaimid, is described based on morphological, morphometrical and molecular analyses from the natural vegetation area in Khorramabad County, Iran. Baladorylaimus karegari sp. n. is characterised by body length 1.45-1.65 mm long, lip region 9.5-10.0 μ m wide, slightly offset, odontostyle 16.0-17.5 μ m long, 1.3-1.5 times as long as lip region wide, guiding ring simple, neck length 243-325 μ m, pharyngeal expansion length 122-146 μ m long, vulva pre-equatorial (V = 44-47), vulva oval with sclerotised lips, tail dissimilar in sexes, filiform in females with pointed terminus (249-307 μ m, c = 5.5-6.0, c′ = 12-17), male tail short and convex-conoid with a terminal peg (27 μ m, c = 59, c′ = 0.9), spicules dorylaimid, 37 μ m long and 14 ventromedian supplements with hiatus. Mesodorylaimus litoralis was also collected during the present study and new data are provided for the species. Molecular characterisation (D2-D3 expansion segments of the rDNA large subunit) of both species is also provided, and the phylogenetic relationships discussed. These are the first molecular data for the genus Baladorylaimus .
