Analysis demonstrates improved production in Alpha Field using real-time monitoring, highlighting automation's role in operational efficiency.
The Alpha Field, one of India's largest and most complex onshore oil-producing assets operated by ONGC, hosts a vast network of over 1,700 producing wells. These wells extract crude ranging from light sweet to highly viscous grades and utilize a wide range of artificial lift technologies, including Sucker Rod Pumps (SRPs), Progressive Cavity Pumps (PCPs), and Gas Lift Systems, with a smaller subset still producing via self-flow. Notably, Gas Lift and Self-Flow wells contribute approximately 30% of the total field output. However, the wide spatial distribution of these wells made real-time monitoring and timely troubleshooting difficult, as manual checks were time-consuming, reactive, and often error prone. To overcome this operational challenge and drive digital transformation, Alpha Field implemented a full-scale Real-Time Monitoring System (RTMS) a game changing initiative that replaced manual inspection with continuous, data driven surveillance. RTMS has been strategically deployed across the Gas Lift and Self Flow wells, capturing critical parameters such as Tubing Head Pressure, Casing Head Pressure, and Gas Lift Supply Pressure. For Intermittent Gas Lift (IGL) wells, the system also tracks Injection ON/OFF status, Cycle Time, Injection Duration, and Battery Voltage. This digital infrastructure enables seamless data acquisition, instant visualization, and automated analytics through a secure and scalable architecture. The deployment of RTMS has delivered a paradigm shift in field performance. Gas Lift wells now benefit from significantly reduced downtime, with advanced analytics enabling near-instant detection and resolution of issues such as valve failures, tubing/packer failures, gas line choking, clashing cycles, ETCC malfunctions, DMV leakages, and flow interruptions. Predictive maintenance, powered by real-time anomaly detection and trend analysis has replaced reactive field visits resulting in higher uptime and optimized manpower deployment. Operators now receive intelligent alerts, auto-generated downtime reports and performance dashboards, enabling swift & informed decision making from centralized control centres. The paper describes detailed workflows and field-validated case studies that highlight the seamless integration of RTMS ultimately leading to substantial production enhancement. This implementation represents one of ONGC's most comprehensive digital field implementation in an onshore environment, offering a scalable and replicable model for other mature and geographically dispersed assets. This paper presents a compelling success story of transformation, highlighting significant production gains and operational improvements through a series of case studies. By leveraging automation and real time intelligence, Alpha Field has set a new benchmark for digital oilfield practices in India demonstrating how traditional operations can evolve into high efficiency, low latency production ecosystems through strategic technological interventions.
