In-depth research identifies 345 hoverfly species in Ukraine, indicating significant gaps in biodiversity knowledge.
Despite a history of research dating back to 1864, the hoverfly fauna (Diptera: Syrphidae) of Ukraine has been studied unevenly across its diverse natural zones. This paper summarizes the results of intensive targeted sampling conducted between 2015 and 2024, focusing on previously understudied territories. Based on a dataset published via the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and material deposited in the I. I. Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology (SIZK), a checklist of 345 species is presented with detailed label data. Significantly, between 2016 and 2025, the author and his colleagues collected 67 species of hoverflies for the first time in Ukraine. This contribution fills major gaps in the distribution knowledge of syrphids across the Forest, Wood-and-Steppe, and Carpathian nature zones of the country. The materials presented herein precede the publication of the annotated catalogue of the hoverflies of Ukraine.
