Analysis of Byzantine and East Christian influences in wall paintings by Tevdore, suggesting a newfound relevance in art history.
Georgian wall paintings at Iprari, Lagurka and Nakipari, survivingin the highland region of Svaneti, are accompanied byinscriptions which, apart from bearing the master?s name andstatus, indicate the exact period in which they were created(Iprari, 1096; Lagurka, 1112; Nakipari, 1130). Despite beingpainted by an artist of the court of King David the Builder, themurals continue to be viewed mainly in a provincial context. The article seeks to revisit the relevance of Tevdore?s artby examining its iconographic and stylistic features in relationto Byzantine trends and East Christian traditions.
