Mixed-methods approach demonstrates gamification improves student engagement and critical thinking in immunology.
Description In the modern era, characterized by the dominance of technology and social media, implementing innovative teaching strategies is crucial for engaging students. Integrating gaming elements into education - gamification, has become an active learning strategy. Gamification encourages content comprehension and critical thinking and reduces stress levels. The present study was conducted with students from the College of Health Sciences and Pharmacy at Chicago State University to explore the effectiveness of gamification in an immunology course. A college-wide survey was distributed to instructors, and data were collected in agreement with the guidelines set out by the Institutional Review Board (IRB). The evaluation instruments included exam grades, pre-test and post-test scores, and student feedback. A mixed-methods approach combining quantitative and qualitative analyses was used. The data were analyzed using R programming. The results demonstrate that gamification is an efficient method to augment student learning in immunology. Using game-based activities as formative assessment instruments enhanced students’ conceptual comprehension and facilitated higher scores on summative assessments. This study highlights the potential of gamification to establish an interactive and inclusive learning environment. Topic Categories Immunology Education and Communication (EDU)
