The Impact of Social Media on Higher Education Students: A Case Study of Universities in Mogadishu, Somalia

This research paper examines the impact of social media on higher education students in Mogadishu, Somalia. The study explores both positive and negative effects of social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube on students’ academic performance, social interactions, and mental health. Using a questionnaire-based survey of 72 university students across three institutions, the research identifies patterns of social media usage, highlighting excessive use, distraction during class, and academic challenges. The findings indicate that while social media facilitates access to educational resources and peer collaboration, it also contributes to reduced concentration, addiction, and lower academic achievement. The study recommends awareness programs and policies to balance social media use and enhance students’ learning outcomes.
