Quality improvement project enhanced patient satisfaction and service quality in ophthalmology, indicating positive impacts of minor changes.
This quality improvement project evaluated the impact of redesigning the Outpatient Department (OPD) slip in the Ophthalmology Department of Hayatabad Medical Complex, Peshawar, on patient and physician satisfaction, consultation efficiency, and service quality. The study was conducted in two phases. In Phase I (January 2022), 100 adult patients completed a structured Urdu version of the PSQ-18 questionnaire to assess baseline satisfaction. The OPD slip was then redesigned to include patient demographics, medical history, examination findings, and treatment advice. After one month of implementation, Phase II (May 2022) surveyed another 100 patients and five ophthalmologists. Data were analyzed using SPSS v25 with descriptive and inferential statistics. Post-intervention, 95% of patients reported easier access to consultants and 99% noted improved signage. Satisfaction regarding examination duration and clarity of written instructions increased from 67% to 87% and 44% to 92%, respectively. Physicians reported 100% satisfaction with documentation completeness and 98% with overall quality of care. Waiting time, however, remained unchanged. Redesigning the OPD slip substantially improved patient and physician satisfaction, documentation accuracy, and consultation efficiency, demonstrating that minor administrative modifications can enhance the quality of outpatient healthcare services.
