Concise approach yields tri(tetrazolyl)-functionalized pyrazole with enhanced detonation velocity and thermal stability.
We report a concise synthesis of the fully tetrazole-substituted pyrazole 3,4,5-tris(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-1H-pyrazole (TYX-39). The key intermediate, 3,5-dicarbonitrile-4-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-1H-pyrazole (2), was prepared by a piperidine-catalyzed one-pot condensation/cycloaddition reaction of 1H-tetrazole-5-carbaldehyde (1), malononitrile, and diazoacetonitrile. Conversion of the two cyano groups into tetrazole moieties afforded the fully functionalized product. TYX-39 exhibits a high nitrogen content (72%), a good density (1.81 g cm⁻³), moderate impact and friction sensitivities (24 J, 240 N), and excellent thermal stability (decomposition onset 261 °C). Its detonation velocity (8568 m s⁻¹) approaches that of RDX (8801 m s⁻¹), underscoring its potential as a promising next-generation energetic material.
