Findings identify MRI hyperenhancement as a risk factor for transient diabetes insipidus in PitNET patients, suggesting careful surgical planning and monitoring.
Hyperenhancing PitNETs are a rare finding on preoperative post-contrast T1-weighted MRI imaging (1.67 % prevalence) and carry 2.8 × higher odds of postoperative transient diabetes insipidus after surgical resection (OR 2.80, 95 % CI 1.09-6.36, p = 0.019). Surgical teams may consider additional approaches to preserving the pituitary stalk and postoperative monitoring for dysnatremia to minimize postoperative risk of diabetes insipidus.
