Perylene diimide shows 98.24% degradation of neutral red, indicating metal complex photocatalysts improve charge transfer.
Metal ions can be used as electronic media to promote charge transfer, thereby improving photocatalytic activity. In this paper, a novel H‐aggregation perylene diimide (PDI) system was designed and synthesized. We have successfully prepared a series of metal complex supramolecular photocatalysts containing different contents of Fe 3+ cations via hydroxyl/Fe 3+ coordination bonds, which can promote the migration of e − and h + . The degradation efficiency of PDI‐M‐Fe (1.5:1) on neutral red is up to 98.24%, which is the best effect among a series of PDI‐M‐Fe, such as PDI‐M‐Fe (1:1), PDI‐M‐Fe (1:0.5), PDI‐M‐Fe (1:0.25), and PDI‐M‐Fe (1:0.15). The results of X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron spin resonance (ESR), and free radical trap experiment show that superoxide radical (·O 2 − ) and h + are dominant active species.
