Randomized clinical trial shows discontinuation of antipsychotics increases relapse risk in first-episode psychosis, suggesting caution is needed.
While reducing the dose, or discontinuing completely, antipsychotics after remission from first‐episode psychosis (FEP) increases the short‐term risk of relapse, the benefits of functioning over the long‐term make this concept controversial. Researchers compared the short‐ and long‐term effects between reduction/discontinuation of the dose within 12 months of relapse and maintaining the dose. The research was done as a randomized clinical trial.
