This analysis highlights behavioral biases like negativity bias affecting performance measurement in managerial accounting, suggesting enhanced learning materials.
Balanced scorecards (BSCs) are a common topic in managerial accounting courses. However, textbook coverage of this topic typically lacks a rich discussion of the academic research findings on using the BSC for performance measurement. Included in this learning strategy are three research insight modules designed to help students engage with key academic research findings on common behavioral biases that managers face when using the BSC to evaluate performance—information overload, common measures bias, and negativity bias—as well as evidence-based solutions. Materials for each research insight module include a video presentation, a corresponding PowerPoint presentation and script, and multiple-choice and discussion questions. The materials can be used online or in person, and instructors can cover one, two, or all three research insight modules. The learning strategy is appropriate for any class that discusses the BSC or performance measurement and evaluation. JEL Classifications: M4; M40; M41; M49.
