Analysis reveals the narrative and temporalities that enhance community growth in francophone Indigenous literature.
Carole Labarre’s award-winning first novel, L’or des mélèzes (2022), focuses on the memories and the current life of an Innu elder, Pishimuss, living in Pessamit on the Côte Nord. Labarre‘s innovative writing practices include multiple shifting temporalities, a focus on intergenerational care, and a multitude of genres, such as poems, songs, letters, legends from Innu culture, as well as first-person and third-person narration. Relying on both anglophone and francophone Indigenous ways of knowing to frame our study, this article shows that Labarre’s narrative succeeds in creating a new voice of resurgence for francophone Indigenous literature today.
