This review demonstrates efficiency and toxicity of surfactant-based corrosion inhibitors in metallic applications, suggesting eco-friendly solutions in industry.
In general, consequences of corrosion are expected to remain significant across the numerous industries that face such issues. High economic losses tied with risk to the public safety are expected. The surfactant is another class of compounds that has been hailed to cover the surface of the metal with a protective layer due to its excellent surface active property. Here, the review extensively covers many surfactant-based preparation methods for corrosion protection with a focus on the following mechanisms, the efficiency, and environmentalism. This is a very important scientific review study that describes many mechanisms of inhibition based on surfactants. This includes adsorption on metallic surfaces, formation of protective layers, and lessening of interfacial tension. It studies the methods used to evaluate the efficiency of surfactant-based inhibitors and is accompanied by case studies for this purpose. Also dealt with in the paper are the environmental considerations in corrosion inhibition processes. Equally, this paper has examined the eco-friendly aspects of surfactants in terms of biodegradability-toxicity perspective. All these require rethinking how challenges such as those presented in using surfactants for corrosion protection should be handled or faced, how they can be altered to make effective inhibitors, and tempered with other real-world scenarios or specific industrial applications with examples. Industrial applications and taken case studies manifest the fact that surfactants being corrosion inhibitors are practically effective even in real life cases. In conclusion, suggestions for future actions and up-and-coming patterns within the surfactant-based corrosion protection industry are made, paving the way for new replications in the struggle to address effective solutions to corrosion problems. Thus, the paper aims to present very useful insights to researchers, engineers, as well as corrosion mitigation professionals in their field.
