Experimental data demonstrates particle size and morphology from laser cutting fuel-containing materials and spent nuclear fuel, suggesting implications for decommissioning processes.
Fragmentation of massive debris of the fuel and fuel-containing materials (FCMs) is one of important steps in the final decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi NPP. We present experimental data on laser cutting of simulated FCMs and samples of VVER-1000 spent nuclear fuel (SNF). The size, morphology, and elemental composition of the particles formed were studied. Up to 35 wt % of particles from FCM cutting and 25 wt % from SNF cutting passed into the vapor-gas phase. The major components are U, O, Zr (total 97.9–98.4%), plutonium content ranges from 0.7 to 1.3%.
