Study shows the impact of arctic fox activity on nest location of geese in Taimyr's tundra, suggesting habitat preferences differ.
We examined data on white-fronted geese breeding performance in 1998–2007, 2012 and 2014–2020, and on bean geese in 2003, 2006 and 2016 in the northwestern and central Taimyr Peninsula. Features of nest location in habitats were analyzed: flat mainland tundra; rocky riverbanks and seashores; tundra on river islands. White-fronted goose breeding showed a positive relationship with lemming numbers. In years with high arctic fox activity, geese nested mainly on rocky banks under the protection of peregrine falcons or snowy owls. Geese showed weak orientation towards previous years' nesting areas in homogeneous tundra. "Accompanying pairs" near nests are described. Bean geese were more "riverine" than white-fronted geese.
