Research demonstrates high sorption efficiency of americium in various solutions using nanodiamonds, indicating potential for water decontamination.
Sorption of americium by commercial samples of detonation nanodiamonds (NDs) from nitric acid, neutral, and alkaline solutions was investigated. Sorption kinetics and dependence of sorption degree on pH, ionic strength, ratio and temperature were studied. Thermodynamic parameters of americium adsorption by NDs were determined for the first time. Conditions of quantitative sorption of americium by NDs samples were found; it was shown that NDs are promising solvents for decontamination of natural waters from possible americium impurities.
