Projection reveals top quark mass uncertainty of 200-300 MeV, indicating improved measurement at HL-LHC with enhanced data collection.
This note presents a projection of the expected uncertainty for a top quark mass measurement with the ATLAS detector at the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). A recently published measurement using top-antitop-quark pair events where the hadronically decaying top quark has high transverse momentum is extrapolated to an integrated luminosity between 1 and 3 ab⁻¹. In addition to the improvement from the increased data statistics, three scenarios for improvements in the systematic uncertainties are investigated. A top quark mass measurement with a precision of around 200--300 MeV may be possible with the full HL-LHC data sample.
